The renovation of the Xingtian Temple Library tells a story of dichotomy, of balance between traditionalism and modernism. The design begins with the use of individual red brick and pre-fabrication on GRC panel to create a new façade. On one hand, the new building responds to the style of the adjacent temple while on another hand, it attempts to express itself.

The entrance’s pond welcomes visitors with a sense of serenity and refreshment; the front door’s round holes resembles that of traditional temple doors. Staid veneer creates a solemn religious atmosphere while the interior lighting gives the space a fresh, lively design. The modern touchups achieve in distinguishing the library from its predecessor, while the building’s inherent traditional identity enables the two neighbors to maintain a sort of cultural dialogue.
